In ihrem ersten literarischen Werk gibt Bettina von Arnim einen neuen Entwurf des schreibenden Ich, literaturtheoretisch eine neue Begründung von Autorschaft. Die prominenten Mythen der Ich-Bildung werden ersetzt: an die Stelle des Narzißmythos als Deutungsfigur künstlerischen Schaffens tritt eine Echo-Rede ohne ersten Sprecher, an die Stelle ödipalen Abarbeitens des Schaffenden an der Instanz negierender "Väter" tritt — in Aneignung des biblischen Ruth-Mythos — ein Sich-Einschreiben in eine männlich-patriarchalische Genealogie mittels eines "Lösers". Die neuen Begründungsmythen werden auch in neuer Weise zusammengeführt. Statt in ein entwicklungspsychologisches Nacheinander mit den Strukturen des Mangels und der Verschiebung auseinandergelegt, werden sie diskursiv vereint, was als Durchbruch zu einem "höheren Ich" vorgestellt wird, dessen Verwirklichungsfeld eben solche Textpraxis ist. Der eigenartig ekstatische Sprachton des Romans wird aus diesem Akt des Durchbruchs erklärt.In her first literary work Bettina von Arnim delineates a new model of the self in the act of writing and puts the notion of authorship on a new theoretical footing. She replaces the myths most prominently used to describe the genesis of Subjectivity: in place of the myth of Narcissus as a prototype of artistic creation she introduces echoed speech in which the first speaker is absent; creative activity, instead of being presented as an endless movement in response to prohibiting "fathers' after the Oedipal crisis, is interpreted after the model of the Book of Ruth as the writing of one's way into a partriarchal genealogy by means of a gô"el (reclaimant). These new myths are also combined in a new manner. Rather than being presented sequentially as part of a psychological development with the structures of absence and displacement, they are united discursively in a process that is interpreted as a breakthrough to a "higher self". This kind of writing is precisely what makes such self-actualization possible. The peculiarly ecstatic tone of the novel can be ascribed to this act of breaking through.
