Identity, citizenship and democracy in Europe
pp. 48-52
Abstract
There is more than one reason to start a statement on citizenship and democracy in Europe with an explanation of the concept of identity and what it could mean on the European level. One of these reasons I will try to explain by referring to a discussion, which took place in the Institutional Affairs Committee of the European Parliament some months before September 1996, when I presented the paper which forms the basis of this chapter.
