Introduction
contemporary historiography
pp. 1-16
Abstract
Critics who feel that the historical profession is in crisis, at an impasse, point to an unseemly number of unresolved controversies, a disarray of methodologies, and a confused relationship to the social sciences and psychology on the one hand and philosophy and literature on the other. There is the failure of cliometry to achieve comprehensive results, and the threat of "narrativity" to remove history from the strictures of scientific method and reducing it to the condition of a merely literary genre. Too, history seems to have lost its popular audience and to have diminished its role in education.
